In December 2017, JCI was awarded Phases 2-4 of the Woods Hole Ferry Terminal Reconstruction. This three-and-half-year project can only operate during the off-season. During construction, the SSA requires two terminals to be open for regular ferry operations. Therefore, JCI can only reconstruct only one slip at a time to ensure the two slips remain operational. During each Summer season, all three slips must be operational.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

Prep work included construction of temporary fenders and excavation work consisted of approximately 20,000-yd3 of material.

Phase 2: The water-based crew worked on the demolition of the existing wharf and once demo was completed, the crew began the piledriving to support the fenders in the new terminal. The land-based crew worked on the sheet piledriving for the new bulkhead system, including sheetpiles, walers and tie-rods.

Phase 3: Included the demolition of the existing sheet pile walls and woodpiles, dredging the new ferry berth, and installing monopiles; trucking and disposing of demolition debris; installation of concrete-filled pipe piles; construction of Pier 2 consisting of precast pile caps, and a composite precast plank and cast-in-place concrete deck, and decorative glass canopy structure; installation of a new transfer bridge; a new sheet pile bulkhead and deadman structure; ship panel fenders; a new floating passenger platforms; water, sewer, electrical, fuel and drainage site utilities; complete site restoration and paving, site facilities, ticket booths, and lighting; decorative stainless steel handrail and finishes.

Phase 4: This phase consisted of the Slip 1 ferry berth construction.

In total, Cashman constructed three ferry berths over a multiyear project construction schedule, during off season periods, which also included collaborative efforts with the Steam Ship Authority to implement several constructive design changes. Cashman is pleased to have successfully completed the Woods Hole Ferry Terminal project ahead of schedule and anticipates that Slip 1 of the Phase 4 work will be fully operational by the end of March 2022.
