CASHMAN DREDGING was contracted for the Capital Improvement project to deepen the existing depths within Berth 3 to a depth of 50 feet (+2 feet) MLW. The firm worked closely with the Owner, as well as the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) and the US Coast Guard (USCG).
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
- Dredged ~9,500 yd3 of non-rock material and 33,000 yd3 of blasted rock.
- Drilled a total of 2,429 holes.
- Drilled and blasted ~170,000 ft2 of rock.
- Placed non-rock materials unsuitable for Historic Area Remediation Site (HARS) placement at an upland disposal facility for beneficial reuse.
- Placed HARS-suitable blasted rock at an artificial reef (Shark River) off the New Jersey coast.
- Employed a third-party consulting firm specializing in strain monitoring of structures adjacent to blast sites to help develop a monitoring program for the pier as part of CASHMAN'S Blast Plan.
- Utilized a staged approach to blasting to minimize the pressure on an existing pier that involved using a production area, a buffer zone, and a one-range cushion zone closest to the pier.
