Cashman/Dutra JV was contracted for the deepening and strategic widening of the Boston Harbor Federal Navigation Channel. The project included deepening and widening the

Broad Sound North Channel to -51 feet MLLW and the Main Ship Channel (MSC) to the Conley Terminal, including the turning basin, to -47 feet MLLW, deepening the President Roads Anchorage and the lower Reserved Channel to -47 feet MLLW. Approximately 11.5 million cubic yards of material was removed with offshore disposal placement at the Massachusetts Bay Disposal Site (MBDS).

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • As Cashman Dredging’s largest dredging project by volume, 11.47 million cubic yards of material was removed using the Dale Pyatt, Icarus, formerly known as F.J. Belesimo, and Captian A.J. Fournier and Dutra’s Paula Lee. The project was completed on Thanksgiving Morning 2020.
  • The work was west of Castle Island in the Main Ship Channel, Reserved Channel, and Turning was a challenging portion due to extensive coordination with the FAA and Logan International Airport flight paths. All parties involved worked well together to complete these areas.
  • A Ripper Barge was designed and built during this project to help overcome some areas of harder materials we have encountered onsite.
