Location: Port of Newark
This project involved dredging of ~150,000 yd^3 of contaminated (heavy metals and petroleum) fine sediments, which were stabilized with Portland cement for upland placement as beneficial reuse material. Cashman was contracted to provide mechanical dredging of both Port Elizabeth and Port Newark, removing upwards of 250 yd^3 of material per hour during peak operation. Material was impacted with TPH, SVOC, and metals. Sediments were excavated using a 14-CY “cable arm” environmental clamshell style bucket. The tight schedule was met despite working around heavy vessel traffic of bulk and general cargo freighters, tankers, container ships, and so forth. Material was dewatered and processed in accordance with the water quality criteria for New York and New Jersey and the A.U.D. issued by the New Jersey DEP.
