Cashman was awarded the project to deepen part of Newark Bay from previous depths of 42-47 feet to 50 feet. The deepending project was aimed at increasing total capacity to accommodate post-Panamax ships. The work consisted of mechanically dredging over 3 million yd^3 of, with over 2.5 million SF of underwater drilling / blasting self-performed by Cashman. The project required the use of bottom-dumping scows to transport 1 million yd^3 of rock to an offshore dump area ~60 miles from the site. These projects are critical to the success of the Army Corps’ navigation channel deepening projects.
